For schools not affiliated with a CAPSO member: $80.00 (per-person)

Places are limited. Registration will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

We envision an interactive presentation where participants are encouraged to ask questions and share perspectives with their colleagues.

About the Presenters

Michael Blacher, a partner in Liebert Cassidy Whitmore's Los Angeles office, represents independent schools and school districts as well as cities, counties, and special districts in all aspects of education, labor and employment law.

Michael has been particularly successful in advising clients to anticipate and prevent potential legal problems. Michael has assisted clients in a variety of school law issues. In particular, Michael specializes in employee and student issues as well as governance and contractual matters. Michael also works extensively with schools on matters involving family and medical leave, discrimination, and wage and hour issues. He assists schools with parent/student handbooks as well as employee handbooks.

A frequent presenter, Michael has provided workshops for a number of schools and associations including the California Association of Private School Organizations (CAPSO),California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS), Bureau of Jewish Education, and the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles.


Melanie Poturica has been with Liebert Cassidy Whitmore since the firm's inception in 1980. She has been its Managing Partner since 1995 and is currently transitioning back to full-time law practice as she co-manages the firm with its next managing partner until October 2010.

Melanie regularly advises independent schools on student, faculty, governance, contract and a variety of other issues. She brings to independent schools her seven-year tenure as a member of Chadwick School's Board of Trustees, including four years service as a member of its executive committee. Melanie was also chair of Chadwick's Risk Management Committee. Melanie is a vigorous litigator with an extensive background in suits involving discrimination and harassment, as well as disciplinary and due process issues, and other employment law topics. In addition to her work as a litigator, Melanie has successfully represented many clients in arbitrations and in administrative hearings.

A dynamic trainer, Melanie brings the scope of her legal and management expertise to her work as one of the firm's top presenters. She has been instrumental in developing our nationally renowned training programs and has been honored to present for such groups as the California Association of Private School Organizations, California Association of Independent Schools, and the National Business Officers Association.
