B42 The Forgotten History of Chinese Americans in California

Experience a slide show lecture describing the early history of Chinese Americans in Southern California from the mid-19th century to World War II. Participants will learn of many nearly forgotten historical accounts of Chinese Americans that are largely absent from history books and public knowledge.
Icy Smith is the award-winning author of "The Lonely Queue," which won the 2002 Clariion Award for best nonfiction book. Her new children's book, "Mei Ling in China City," is based on an 80-year-old woman's experience in Los Angeles during World War II.

E28 Teaching Character, Ethics and Sportsmanship through High School Sports

At its best, athletic competition can hold intrinsic value for our society. It is a symbol of a great ideal: pursuing victory with honor. The values of millions of participants and spectators are directly and dramatically influenced by the values conveyed by organized sports. This session will contain valuable tools to assist schools in keeping high school sports in perspective.
