AB 3 Would Provide Deductions for Contributions to College Savings Plans

A bill that would provide Californians with an additional incentive to set aside money for their children's future college education has been introduced by State Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee of San Luis Obispo.

Sam Blakeslee
The bill, AB 3, would establish a deduction of up to $750 per taxable year for each designated beneficiary of a qualified tuition program, as specified by Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code. Earnings generated by contributions to Section 529 plans are tax-free, as long as the account is used for qualified post-secondary education expenses, which include tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

CAPSO supports passage of AB 3, and urges you to actively support the bill.

The bill will be heard by the Assembly Committee on Revenue and Taxation. If you reside within a district served by any of the following committee members, please contact their respective offices to indicate your support for AB 3:

Dear Assemblyman Assemblyperson ___________________,

I am writing to strongly encourage your support for AB 3 Deduction for Education Savings.

Faced with the rapidly rising cost of higher education, this bill would provide an incentive for parents and families to set aside savings that will benefit not only our children, but all the people of our state.

Sincerely,
