California K-12 Private School Enrollment Increases by 1% in 2005-2006

Reversing a three year trend, California's private school enrollment increased by 1% in 2005-2006.

CAPSO publishes an annual report summarizing private school enrollment information. "California's Private Schools: A Portrait of Enrollment" offers a comprehensive overview of current data and trends at both state and county levels. All information presented in the report is derived from private school affidavit data collected by the California Department of Education.

Some highlights from this year's report:

  • California is home to 3,724 private schools enrolling 594,597 students in grades K-12

  • More than one in four schools in the state of California is a private school

  • 90% of private school students are enrolled in non-profit private schools

  • 78% of private school students are enrolled in religiously affiliated schools

  • Thirty one counties experienced an increase in private school enrollment

  • The ratio of students-to-teachers in California's private schools is 13.5 to 1

  • Year-to-year enrollment in non-profit private schools increased by 2.1%

  • Year-to-year enrollment in secular private schools increased by 5.2%
