Facing History

As many of you recall, in the days after 9/11 Facing History and Ourselves produced a series of readings titled Confronting September 11th, 2001. These readings continue to bear relevance in classrooms and discussions planned for this year.

Facing History now invites educators to examine two new resources.

A Year LaterA Year Later: Confronting the Legacies of September 11th is new collection of readings produced by Facing History staff. These materials build upon familiar Facing History themes: the complexity of community and identity; the intersection of ethnic, national and religious group membership; civil liberties in a democracy; tolerance; the balance of secular and religious perspectives; and gender and human rights. Each of these readings builds on the work of scholars, while retaining our existing Facing History scope and sequence.

Educators are also encouraged to visit a new Facing History web site, Memory, History, Memorials. Initially, the site focuses on the phenomenon of spontaneous memorials created in the wake of 9/11 and other tragedies. In the coming months, Memory, History, Memorials will highlight additional themes such as the construction of traditional memorials and monuments, counter-memorials, and the challenge of memorializing 20th Century genocide and collective violence.
