Private School Enrollment Remains Stable in 2003-04

Enrollment in California non-profit private schools remained stable in the 2003-04 academic year according to data provided by the California Department of Education.

Total K-12 enrollment in the state's non-profit private schools was 530,159 in 2003-04. Students attending non-profit private schools account for 88% of the total private school enrollment.

As a percentage of the total, the number of non-profit private schools increased by 1.4% from 2002-03.

Religious schools tend to enroll more students than secular schools. While comprising just under 2/3 of all private schools, students attending religious schools account for nearly 80% of the total private school enrollment.

The average religious school enrollment (195 students) is twice that of private, secular schools (95). The median religious school enrollment (125 students) is more than three times that of secular schools (40).

The student-to-teacher ratio for all California private schools remained constant at 13.7 students for every full time teacher. Schools with secular orientations demonstrated an average student-to-teacher ratio (10.4 to 1) that is significantly lower than that found in private religious schools (14.9 to 1).
