21st Annual Summer Seminar for Language Teachers

The 21st Annual Summer Seminar for Language Teachers, co-sponsored by the California Foreign Language Project and the California Language Teachers' Association will be held July 31 to August 6, 2004–2006 at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The program will provide participants with 40 hours of subject matter competence/professional development in the area of foreign language education.

This year's program is specifically designed to help language educators to meet the High Objective Uniform State Standard of Evaluation (HOUSSE) provision for satisfying the "Highly Qualified Teacher" requirement contained in the No Child Left Behind Act. (Note: This requirement does not pertain to teachers employed in California private schools. However, foreign language teachers possessing a state-issued teaching credential may opt to participate in this outstanding program.)

Participation in the Seminar will:

  • Develop a better understanding of the impact of current initiatives and the NCLB legislation on language programs and its intent regarding the relationship between highly qualified teachers and improved student performance.

  • Explore a range of relevant topics in content-specific strands as well as in special general sessions devoted to addressing issues related to literacy, assessment, research on second language acquisition and best practices for teaching language and culture.

  • Gain knowledge of subject matter content and methods for organizing curriculum to support student understanding.

  • Demonstrate student understanding through instructional strategies that are appropriate to foreign language education and use of materials, resources and technologies to make the subject matter more accessible to students.

  • Practice assessing student learning that demonstrates subject matter competence and communicating student learning goals and outcomes to students and their families.

All participants will choose one of the following strands:
  • Early Language Education

  • Literacy Development in the Foreign/Heritage Language Classroom

  • Making Communication Come Alive in Your Language Classroom

  • Pursuing Accomplished Teaching: Preparing for National Board Certification

  • Advanced Placement in Spanish Literature (requires additional $100 materials fee)

  • Enhancing Korean Language Instruction

  • Maximizing Student Performance in the Japanese Language Classroom

  • The Motivational Classroom: Learning German Language and Culture

  • Spanish for Spanish Speakers

  • TV5 and Music: Tapping the Power of French Media to Motivate your Students
Cost
  • $750—Double Occupancy (CLTA Member)
  • $900—Single Occupancy (CLTA Member)
  • $850—Double Occupancy (CLTA Non-Member)
  • $1,000—Single Occupancy (CLTA Non-Member)
  • $40—CLTA Membership (optional)
Note: Teachers and other school personnel considering participation in the Seminar should explore, through consultation with appropriate officials from your local school district, the use of No Child Left Behind funding to underwrite your participation in the program. Potential sources of funding include Title I (Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged), Title II, Part A (Preparing, Training and Recruiting High Quality Teachers and Principals), and Title III (Language Instruction for Limited English Proficient and Immigrant Children).
