Private School Enrollment Report: 2010-2011


Among the highlights of this year's report:
Number of Private Schools and Total Enrollment
- Total number of private schools in California: 3,358
- Total private school enrollment: 515,143
- One of every four schools providing instruction in any of grades K-12 was a private school.
- Average enrollment: 153
- Median* enrollment: 74
* The median is that point in a given distribution at which exactly half the scores or values fall above and half fall below.
Schools and Enrollment by School Type
- 69 percent of California's private schools were constituted on a nonprofit basis.
- Nonprofit private schools accounted for 88 percent of the state's total K-12 private school enrollment.
- Median enrollment in nonprofit private schools was more than seven times greater than that of for-profit schools.
- 62 percent of California's private schools were religiously oriented.
- 77 percent of the state's total K-12 private school enrollment is found in schools with religious orientations.
- Median enrollment in schools with religious orientations was three-and-a-half times greater than that of private schools with secular orientations.
