On December 22, Congress enacted the Hurricane Education Recovery Act providing $1.6 billion for school and students impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The law includes assistance in support of eligible students attending qualifying private schools. Fund for Teachers provides grants for teachers in Los Angeles, San Franciso and Oakland who meet the innovative organization's eligibility criteria and make successful application for funding designed to underwrite summer professional development opportunities. A new report issued by the US Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics confirms that private school students continue to outperform their public school counterparts in reading, mathematics, science and writing, across grade levels, racial and ethnic groups. Access forms, session listings and presenter information. The US Department of Education has issued newly proposed regulations governing the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. Comments on the proposed regulations are invited. CAPSO provides links to the proposed regs, instructions for the submittal of comments, and additional resources designed to better familiarize members of the private school community with the relevant provisions of the reauthorized law. On May 17 and 18, over 200 private school leaders from throughout California gathered to reflect upon the meaning of accountability within the context of private, K-12 education. A budget proposal currently before the U.S. Congress has placed funding for several popular No Child Left Behind programs in jeopardy. Each of the programs provides equitable services for private school children. See what you can do to preserve these important federal programs. A bill introduced by Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee would provide Californians with a deduction for contributions to qualified college savings programs. CAPSO supports passage of AB 3. The California Department of Education has updated its guidance document pertaining specifically to those portions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act that provide benefits to private school children, teachers and other education personnel. Qualifying students currently in grades 10 and 11 are invited to apply for participation in the program to take place July 10-16, 2005, at CSU Sacramento. Housing, meals, program materials and transportation will be provided at no cost to participants. The dealine for the submittal of applications is March 15, 2005. The Student National Origin Report (SNOR) must be filed by April 1, 2005 in order to assure equitable participation in Title III (Language Instruction for LEP and Immigrant Students) of the No Child Left Behind Act.
